What does a cockroach exterminator do?
A cockroach exterminator inspects kitchens, bathrooms and appliances to find where roaches are hiding, applies professional gel baits and targeted treatments into those spots, sets monitors to measure activity, and returns to follow up until the population is gone.
In Edmonton, cockroach problems almost always mean the German cockroach. They don't survive outdoors in Alberta winters, so they live entirely inside heated buildings, mostly apartment blocks, rental suites, restaurants and shared housing. They usually arrive in grocery boxes, used appliances, furniture or luggage, then spread through plumbing and electrical gaps.
A single female produces egg cases with dozens of young at a time. That's why an infestation that looks small can become a serious problem in a few months.

Signs of cockroaches in your home
The main signs are roaches running when you turn on a kitchen or bathroom light at night, small black pepper-like droppings in cabinets and drawers, egg cases and a musty, oily smell.
- Live roaches at night near the sink, stove, fridge, dishwasher or bathroom vanity
- Droppings like coffee grounds or black pepper in cabinet corners and hinges
- Brown, capsule-shaped egg cases in drawers or behind appliances
- Shed skins and dead roaches in out-of-the-way spots
- A musty, oily odour in heavier infestations
Why do cockroach sprays and foggers fail?
Store-bought sprays and foggers only kill roaches they contact, and they repel the rest deeper into walls, cabinets and neighbouring suites. German cockroaches also breed so fast that missing even a few egg cases restarts the infestation.
Foggers are the most common mistake we see. The mist settles on open surfaces, but cockroaches spend most of their time inside cracks: behind the backsplash, under the dishwasher, inside cabinet hinges and in electrical boxes. Fogging pushes them further into those voids, and in apartment buildings it often drives them into the suite next door. Over-the-counter sprays can also make professional baits less effective, because roaches avoid treated areas.
Professional baiting works the opposite way. Roaches eat small placements of gel bait and carry it back to their hiding spots, where it spreads through the population, including to young that never leave the harbourage. Combined with insect growth regulators that stop nymphs maturing, this approach collapses the population instead of scattering it.
Cockroaches in Edmonton apartments: landlords and tenants
In multi-unit buildings, cockroach control works best when the landlord coordinates treatment of the affected suite and the suites around it, and tenants prepare their kitchens and report activity early.
Most cockroach infestations we treat in Edmonton are in older apartment buildings and walk-ups, where shared plumbing walls let roaches move freely between units. Alberta landlords are responsible for keeping rentals in a condition that meets minimum housing and health standards, so tenants should report cockroaches to their landlord in writing. Property managers can set up building programs through our commercial pest control service, with scheduled visits and reports for each unit.
How we get rid of cockroaches
We use a baiting-first approach: we find the harbourage spots, apply professional gel baits, use dusts and growth regulators where appropriate, monitor with sticky traps, and come back to follow up.
- InspectionWe check behind and under appliances, inside cabinets and hinges, around plumbing and in electrical boxes to find where roaches are breeding.
- Targeted treatmentProfessional gel baits go into cracks and crevices roaches use. Where appropriate we add dusts in wall voids and insect growth regulators to break the breeding cycle. All products are registered with Health Canada's PMRA and applied according to the label.
- MonitoringSticky monitors show where activity continues, so the next visit targets the right spots.
- Follow-upWe return to re-bait and check monitors until there's no sign of activity. In apartment buildings we recommend treating adjoining suites too.
How much does a cockroach exterminator cost in Edmonton?

The price depends on the size of the infestation, how many rooms are involved and how many visits are needed. Restaurants and food businesses that need inspection-ready service records should see our commercial pest control page. How to prepare for cockroach treatment
Good preparation helps baits work faster: clear the cabinets, clean grease without using store-bought sprays, store food sealed, and fix moisture sources.
- Empty the cabinets under the sink and the ones next to the stove so we can reach the corners
- Clean grease and crumbs from counters, the stove top and under appliances, but don't spray store-bought insecticide (it repels baits)
- Store food in sealed containers and take garbage out every night
- Fix dripping taps and wipe up standing water. Roaches need moisture.
- Leave bait placements alone after treatment. Don't wipe them away.
Cockroaches and bed bugs often show up together in the same buildings. If you're also getting bites, read about bed bug treatment in Edmonton.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of cockroaches are in Edmonton?
Almost all indoor cockroach problems in Edmonton are German cockroaches. They are light brown, about 13 to 16 mm long, with two dark stripes behind the head. They live indoors year-round in warm, humid spots such as kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances and inside cabinet hinges.
How much does a cockroach exterminator cost in Edmonton?
Typical market prices for cockroach treatment in Edmonton range from about $150 to $500 for a single home or suite, usually including a follow-up visit. Larger infestations, multi-unit buildings and restaurants are normally quoted as a program. Call (780) 262-3335 for an exact quote.
Why don't cockroach killer sprays work?
Store-bought cockroach killer sprays and foggers kill only the roaches they touch and often scatter the rest deeper into walls and neighbouring suites. German cockroaches also breed fast and can develop resistance. Professional gel baits work better because roaches carry the bait back to hiding spots and share it.
Can cockroaches spread between apartments?
Yes. German cockroaches move between suites along plumbing chases, electrical lines and gaps under doors. In apartment buildings the best results come from inspecting and treating adjoining units at the same time, which is why we work with landlords and property managers on building-wide plans.
How long does it take to get rid of cockroaches?
Most homes see a sharp drop within two to three weeks of a professional baiting treatment, with a follow-up visit to catch any newly hatched nymphs. Heavy infestations, cluttered kitchens and multi-unit buildings can take several treatments over a few months.
