Yellowjacket wasps at a nest, common in Edmonton yards by late summer

Do you need professional wasp nest removal?

You need professional wasp nest removal if the nest is larger than a softball, hidden inside a wall, soffit or the ground, near a doorway or play area, or if anyone in your home is allergic to stings.

Most wasp calls in Edmonton involve yellowjackets. They build paper nests inside wall voids, attics, soffits, sheds, hollow fences and old rodent burrows in the lawn. Bald-faced hornets build the large grey football-shaped nests you see hanging from trees and eaves. By August a single yellowjacket colony can contain thousands of workers, and disturbing the nest with a hose, a shovel or store-bought spray at the entrance can trigger a mass defensive response.

Wasps chewing through drywall into a living room or bedroom is a sign the nest inside the wall has grown large. Don't seal the entrance from outside. It forces the wasps to find another way out, often into the house.

Yellowjacket nests grow fast through July and August. A nest that was golf-ball sized in June can be basketball sized by late summer.

Yellowjackets, hornets or bees: what's nesting on your property?

In Edmonton, nests in walls and the ground are usually yellowjackets, large grey nests hanging from trees and eaves are bald-faced hornets, and small umbrella-shaped nests under railings are paper wasps. Fuzzy bees are pollinators and are handled differently.

Yellowjackets

Black and yellow, and aggressive around food in late summer. They nest in wall voids, soffits, sheds, hollow fence posts and old burrows in the lawn. These are the most common nests we remove.

Bald-faced hornets

Black and white. They build football-shaped grey paper nests in trees, shrubs and under eaves, and defend them strongly when disturbed.

Paper wasps

Slimmer, with long dangling legs. They build open, umbrella-shaped combs under deck railings, eaves and playground equipment.

Bees

Fuzzier, and focused on flowers rather than your food. Honey bee swarms are referred to local beekeepers. Bumble bee nests are usually left alone unless they're in a dangerous spot.

Wasps in walls, soffits and the ground

Hidden nests are the most dangerous to deal with yourself. A ground nest in the lawn can be stepped on or hit with a mower. A wall nest can break through drywall into living space. And nests in high soffits on two-storey homes, common in newer neighbourhoods like Windermere, Summerside and The Hamptons, need ladders and protective gear. If you can't see the nest, only an entrance hole, call a professional.

When is wasp season in Edmonton?

In Edmonton, wasp queens start nests in May and June, colonies grow through July, and the City of Edmonton notes that yellowjacket populations peak in mid-to-late August. They stay active until the first hard frost.

MonthWhat's happeningBest action
May–JuneSingle queens building small nestsCheapest and easiest time to remove
JulyColonies growing quickly, more foragingBook removal before nests get large
AugustPeak numbers; wasps scavenge food and drinksProfessional removal for large or hidden nests
September–OctoberAggressive late-season wasps until frostTreat nests near doors; seal entry gaps afterward

Wasp numbers swing a lot from year to year. Some summers bring far more nests than others, so a nest-free year doesn't mean you'll stay nest-free.

How our wasp exterminators remove nests

We locate the main nest entrance, treat the nest with a registered product designed to reach the colony, and remove the nest where it is accessible. Then we advise on sealing the gap once activity stops.

  1. Locate and identifyWe find the nest and identify the species. Yellowjacket, hornet and paper wasp nests each need a different approach. Honey bees are referred to local beekeepers.
  2. Treat the colonyUsing protective gear, we apply a product registered with Health Canada's PMRA, applied according to the label, directly into the nest or void.
  3. Remove where accessibleExposed nests in trees, eaves and sheds are taken down. Nests inside walls are treated in place, and the colony dies off within a day or two.
  4. Prevent the next oneOnce the nest is dead, we recommend sealing the soffit, siding or vent gap so next year's queens can't move into the same spot.

How much does wasp nest removal cost in Edmonton?

Typical market prices for wasp nest removal in Edmonton range from about $150 to $400 for one accessible nest. Hidden, high or multiple nests, and urgent after-hours visits, cost more.

Send a photo of the nest and the entrance when you call (780) 262-3335 and we can usually give you an exact quote over the phone. See all typical pest control prices in Edmonton.

Nests hidden in walls or high soffits, or several nests on one property, take more time and equipment. That's where most of the price difference comes from. Removing nests early in the season, in May or June, is usually quicker and cheaper than waiting until August.

Before we arrive

  • Keep kids and pets indoors and away from the nest
  • Don't spray, flood, block or burn the entrance
  • Note where wasps are flying in and out, and whether any are getting inside the house
  • Tell us if anyone in the home is allergic to stings

Wasp problems around trees, ravines and fences are just as common outside the city. We provide the same nest removal in Sherwood Park, St. Albert and Spruce Grove. If spiders are also taking over your deck, see our spider control page.

Frequently asked questions

When is wasp season in Edmonton?

Queens start new nests in May and June, colonies grow through July, and the City of Edmonton notes that yellowjacket populations peak in mid-to-late August. Wasps stay active and become more aggressive until the first hard frost in September or October. Nests are smallest, and easiest to deal with, in late spring.

How much does wasp nest removal cost in Edmonton?

Typical market prices for wasp nest removal in Edmonton range from about $150 to $400 for a single accessible nest. Nests inside walls, high soffits or underground, multiple nests, and after-hours calls cost more. Call (780) 262-3335 with photos and the nest location for an exact quote.

Should I remove a wasp nest myself?

Small, exposed nests the size of a golf ball in spring can sometimes be handled with a registered wasp spray at dusk. Large nests, nests inside walls or soffits, ground nests and anything near a doorway or play area should be left to a professional, especially if anyone in the home is allergic to stings.

What happens to the wasp nest after treatment?

Eliminating the colony comes first: the nest is treated so the wasps inside and those returning to it die off, usually within a day or so. A nest that's reachable, like one under an eave or on a shed, can then be taken down and bagged for disposal. Nests inside walls or soffits are usually left in place, because an empty nest isn't reused.

Will the wasps come back to the same nest next year?

No. Yellowjacket and hornet colonies in Edmonton die off in the fall, and only new queens overwinter. They do not reuse old nests, but they often choose similar sheltered spots, so sealing gaps in soffits and siding after removal helps prevent a new nest next spring.

What is the difference between wasps, hornets and bees?

Yellowjackets are black and yellow wasps that nest in walls and the ground and scavenge food. Bald-faced hornets are black and white and build large paper nests in trees and under eaves. Bees are fuzzier and are important pollinators. We do not treat honey bees; we refer those to local beekeepers.
